Description
Prerequisite: HIS 102, 203. Examination of the social, political, and intellectual developments in Europe and America from the late 17th century to the beginning of the French Revolution. In tracing the path to modernity, careful attention will be given to the British, French, and American enlightenment movements. Aspects of the Ancien Regime will be discussed in order to better grasp the spirit of criticism that emerged from the educated elite, or what Jefferson called, the "natural aristocracy." Close examination will be given to political theories which provides the context for the American Revolution, together with the contributions of figures such as Locke, Newton, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Jefferson, Adams, and others.
